Southern Province · Matara

Whale watching in Mirissa is one of the most popular marine experiences in Sri Lanka. Located along the southern coast, Mirissa sits within a key migration route in the Indian Ocean, making it one of the best places in the world to spot large marine mammals close to shore.

High chances of seeing the Blue Whale, the largest animal on Earth. Sightings are frequent during the peak season, along with Sperm Whale, Fin Whale, and pods of Spinner Dolphin. Occasionally, sea turtles and flying fish can also be seen during the trip.

Boats usually depart early in the morning from Mirissa Fisheries Harbour, as calmer seas improve the chances of sightings. Tours typically last between 3 to 5 hours, depending on how far the whales are located. Licensed operators follow guidelines to maintain safe distances and reduce disturbance to marine life, which is important for conservation.

The best time for whale watching in Mirissa is from November to April, when the ocean is calmer and visibility is better. During this period, the southern waters of Sri Lanka become a feeding ground for migrating whales, increasing the likelihood of encounters. Outside of these months, rough seas can limit boat trips and reduce sightings.
