Weligama Bay is one of Sri Lanka’s best-known surf and beach destinations, located along the island’s southern coastline between Mirissa and Ahangama. The name “Weligama” translates to “sandy village,” which fits the area perfectly. The bay stretches into a long curve of soft sand with wide open views of the Indian Ocean.
The bay has a sandy seabed and steady rolling waves, making it one of the easiest places in Sri Lanka to learn surfing. Surf schools line the beachfront, and lessons take place throughout the day, especially during the peak surf season from November to April.
Unlike beaches with rough shore breaks, Weligama’s waves break further out, giving beginners more time to balance and ride. Even first-time surfers often manage to stand up within a lesson or two, which is why the town attracts long-stay travelers and surf learners from around the world.
Weligama is also known for its traditional stilt fishermen, one of Sri Lanka’s most recognizable coastal images. Fishermen balance on wooden poles fixed into shallow reef areas while using hand lines to catch fish. Although this practice is less common today than in the past, it still remains part of the area’s identity and cultural history.
Beyond surfing, the bay works well for swimming, beach walks, and sunset watching. The town itself has grown steadily, with cafés, seafood restaurants, guesthouses, and small boutique hotels spread along the coastline. Despite the tourism growth, parts of Weligama still maintain the feel of a working fishing town, especially around the harbor area.
