Kumana National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most important birdwatching destinations, located along the island’s southeastern coastline near Yala. Originally declared a bird sanctuary in 1938 and later upgraded to a national park in 1970, Kumana is known for its wetlands, lagoons, and quieter safari experience compared to some of the country’s busier wildlife parks.
The park covers a large area of forest, grassland, mangroves, and marshes, creating ideal conditions for both resident and migratory birds. One of its most famous areas is the Kumana Villu, a natural swamp lake surrounded by mangrove trees. During nesting season, thousands of birds gather here, turning the area into one of the most active bird habitats in Sri Lanka.
More than 200 bird species have been recorded in the park. Visitors often spot painted storks, pelicans, egrets, spoonbills, and black-necked storks, especially between April and July, when migratory activity increases.
Although birds are the main attraction, Kumana is also home to elephants, crocodiles, wild boar, deer, and even leopards. Because the park shares a similar ecosystem with nearby Yala, many of the same animals can be found here, but with fewer vehicles and less traffic on safari tracks.
Large open wetlands suddenly transition into thick forest sections, while coastal lagoons attract both wildlife and water birds throughout the day. Early morning safaris are especially rewarding, with cooler temperatures and increased animal activity.
