Established in 2009, Ambuluwawa Tower is one of Sri Lanka’s most unusual landmarks. Rising from the Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex near Gampola, the white spiral tower sits on top of a mountain peak about 3,567 feet above sea level. From the ground, it already looks dramatic. From the top, the view stretches across forests, hills, villages, and mountain ranges including Pidurutalagala, Knuckles, Bible Rock, and Adam’s Peak on clear days.
What makes Ambuluwawa famous is its narrow spiral staircase wrapped around the outside of the tower. As visitors climb higher, the path becomes tighter, windier, and steeper. For some, it feels exciting. For others, slightly terrifying. Either way, it has become one of Sri Lanka’s most photographed viewpoints.
The tower itself stands roughly 48 meters tall and is part of the larger Ambuluwawa Multi-Religious Centre. One of the most interesting facts about the site is that it includes symbols and places of worship connected to Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity within the same complex. The concept was designed to promote religious harmony and environmental conservation together in one location.
Why visitors travel to Ambuluwawa:
- Panoramic mountain views from the summit
- Narrow spiral staircase popular on social media
- Cool climate compared to low-country cities
- Biodiversity park with rare plants and birdlife
- Unique architecture unlike other towers in Sri Lanka
Visitors should be prepared for the climb. The staircase becomes narrow near the top, and people often need to wait for others to pass through certain sections. Comfortable shoes are recommended, especially during rainy weather when the steps can become slippery.
Ambuluwawa has grown rapidly in popularity over the past few years due to travel photography and drone videos, but the location still keeps its peaceful mountain atmosphere. Between the cool wind, distant mountain views, and the thrill of the climb, it offers a different side of Sri Lanka that feels far away from crowded beaches and busy city streets.
