Gal Oya National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most unique wildlife parks because it offers boat safaris through a national park. Established in 1954, the park was created mainly to protect the catchment area of the massive Senanayake Samudraya reservoir, the country’s largest inland body of water.
Unlike parks dominated by dry grasslands and dusty safari tracks, Gal Oya combines forests, rocky hills, and open water. The reservoir sits at the center of the park, shaping both the landscape and wildlife movement. Animals regularly move between small islands and shorelines, especially during dry periods when water levels shift.
The biggest highlight here is the chance to see elephants swimming between islands. Gal Oya is one of the few places in Sri Lanka where this behavior is commonly observed. Elephants often enter the water to cross sections of the reservoir or feed on aquatic plants near the edges. Seeing a wild elephant swimming across open water changes the entire safari experience.
Boat safaris also provide a different viewing angle compared to jeep safaris. Instead of approaching animals on roads, visitors quietly move across the water while spotting birds, crocodiles, buffalo, and elephants along the shoreline. The park is home to more than 150 bird species, including fish eagles, kingfishers, and cormorants.
The surrounding forest areas support leopards, sloth bears, deer, and monkeys, though sightings depend on timing and conditions. Because Gal Oya receives fewer visitors than parks like Yala or Udawalawe, the environment feels quieter and less commercial.
