Mannar Bird Sanctuary is one of Sri Lanka’s top destinations for migratory birdwatching, especially during the northern winter migration season. Located along the island’s northwestern coast, the sanctuary sits within an important route used by birds traveling between Europe, Central Asia, and South Asia.
The area is made up of lagoons, mudflats, mangroves, salt pans, and shallow coastal waters. These habitats provide feeding and resting grounds for thousands of birds arriving from overseas. Between November and April, the sanctuary becomes highly active as migratory species gather across the wetlands.
One of the biggest highlights is the arrival of flamingos. Large flocks of Greater Flamingos can often be seen standing in shallow water or flying across the lagoons in formation. Their bright pink color against the dry northern landscape creates one of the most recognizable wildlife scenes in Sri Lanka.
Mannar is home to more than 150 bird species that have been recorded in the region, including pelicans, painted storks, gulls, terns, sandpipers, and herons. The mix of freshwater and saltwater ecosystems supports both migratory and resident bird populations throughout the year.
The sanctuary also benefits from its location near the historic Mannar area, known for its colonial history, fishing communities, and the famous baobab tree believed to have been introduced centuries ago by Arab traders.
