Belilena Cave, also known as Batatota Lena, is one of Sri Lanka’s most important prehistoric archaeological sites. Set on a hillside above the Kelani River near Kitulgala, the cave has provided evidence of human habitation dating back over 12,000 years, making it a key location for understanding early human life on the island.
Archaeological excavations carried out in the 20th century uncovered stone tools, bone fragments, and food remains inside the cave. These findings are linked to early human communities often referred to as “Balangoda Man,” known for their hunter-gatherer lifestyle.
Reaching the cave requires a moderate uphill hike that takes around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on pace. The trail passes through rubber plantations, forest patches, and village paths, giving a mix of natural and rural scenery. The final section includes stone steps leading up to the cave entrance.
The cave itself is large, with a high ceiling and a wide opening that allows natural light to enter. From the entrance, there are views of the surrounding forest and the Kelani River below. The location was ideal for early humans; not just for shelter, but also for access to water, food sources, and a vantage point over the area.
Unlike heavily developed tourist sites, Belilena remains relatively simple. There are no large facilities inside the cave, which helps preserve its condition and keeps the experience closer to its natural state.
