Temple of the Tooth Relic, also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa, is one of the most important religious sites in Sri Lanka. Located in the hill city of Kandy, the temple houses what is believed to be a sacred tooth relic of the Buddha. For centuries, this relic has symbolized political power and religious authority, as it was believed that whoever protected it had the right to rule the country.
The temple complex is part of the former royal palace of the Kandyan Kingdom and sits next to the scenic Kandy Lake. The architecture reflects traditional Kandyan design, with carved wooden pillars, white stone walls, and decorative golden elements. Inside, the relic is kept in a series of ornate caskets, but it is not directly visible to visitors.
Daily offerings take place three times a day: morning, afternoon, and evening, known as “Thevava.” These rituals include traditional drumming and are the best times for visitors to experience the temple’s spiritual atmosphere.
Key highlights within the temple complex include:

- International Buddhist Museum – Showcases the spread of Buddhism across different countries
- Audience Hall Kandy – A wooden structure used for royal meetings and ceremonies
Visitors are required to dress modestly when entering the temple, covering shoulders and knees. Footwear must be removed at the entrance. The best time to visit is early morning or evening to avoid crowds and experience the rituals.
The Temple of the Tooth Relic is about a 3 to 4-hour drive from Colombo. It remains an active place of worship and a key cultural landmark, offering insight into Sri Lanka’s religious traditions, history, and identity.
