Galle Fort

Table of Contents

Galle Fort is a coastal fortress first built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later expanded by the Dutch. Today, it is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its well-preserved colonial architecture and historical significance.

Inside the fort, the layout follows a structured grid pattern with narrow streets lined with centuries-old buildings. These reflect a mix of Dutch, Portuguese, and British influences, with features like courtyards, verandas, and thick walls designed for the tropical climate. Unlike many heritage sites, Galle Fort remains a “living fort,” where residents, boutique hotels, cafés, and shops operate within historic structures.

Some of the most notable attractions within Galle Fort highlight its colonial past and its role as a key trading hub in the Indian Ocean:

  • Galle Lighthouse – Originally built in 1848 and rebuilt in 1939, this is the oldest lighthouse in Sri Lanka, located at the southern tip of the fort.
  • Dutch Reformed Church – Constructed in 1755, this historic church features original tombstones, wooden interiors, and classic Dutch colonial design.
  • National Maritime Museum  Displays Sri Lanka’s maritime history, including shipwreck artifacts and exhibits on coastal ecosystems.
  • Old Dutch Hospital – One of the oldest buildings in the fort, now converted into a shopping and dining precinct.
  • Galle Fort Ramparts – Walking along the ramparts is one of the main experiences. The elevated pathways offer uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean, especially at sunset, making it one of the most photographed spots in southern Sri Lanka.

Galle Fort is approximately a 2-hour drive from Colombo via the Southern Expressway. The best time to visit is from December to April, when the weather is drier and more suitable for walking. The site can be easily explored on foot, and there is no entrance fee.
